Pressure Systems and Engineering

Connect equipment ratings, rig interfaces and operating requirements.

The design basis

Define the conditions

Every system begins with a clear account of its duty.

Pressure

Establish the pressure duty

Match the proposed arrangement to the application.

Review pressure requirements

Define pressure conditions, operating states, connected systems and design responsibilities. Equipment ratings and the limits of the assembled system are reviewed for the specific project.

Temperature

Understand the thermal environment

Consider exposure, fluids and material compatibility together.

Review thermal requirements

High-temperature applications require a suitability review covering anticipated conditions, fluid and material compatibility, exposure and the proposed equipment. Project requirements establish the necessary evidence and acceptance.

Engineering

Make the assumptions visible

Connect modeling work to the decision it informs.

Review engineering scope

Engineering and modeling scopes identify the input data, intended outputs, assumptions and limits of use. Custom pressure-system design and tooling start with the required function and the interfaces already in place.

The connected arrangement

Connect the equipment

Containment, measurement and control each serve a distinct purpose.

Containment

Follow the return path

Understand each connection and the boundary it creates.

Explore containment

In surface-backpressure MPD, a rotating control device helps divert returns into the intended pressure-control flow path. The rig interfaces and equipment arrangement are specific to the application.

Measurement

Put observations in context

Location, timing and measurement quality shape the interpretation.

Explore measurement

Pressure and returns-flow observations become useful through their relationship to the operating activity. Sensor placement, calibration, timing and data quality affect what can be inferred from a reading.

Control

Understand the adjustable contribution

Surface backpressure acts within the system’s operating envelope.

Explore pressure control

A choke can regulate surface backpressure in a suitable MPD arrangement. Hydrostatic pressure, annular friction and surface backpressure contribute to the pressure profile; their effects vary with depth and operating state.

From design onward

Review design requirements

Carry the design basis through installation and acceptance.

Discuss the design
Review the design boundary

The proposed system needs a defined function, environment, equipment duty, interface list and acceptance basis. HP/HT suitability belongs to the specific application and equipment configuration.

API product standards and recommended practices have distinct scopes. Product design requirements do not by themselves establish the suitability or readiness of an installed arrangement.

Plan commissioning

Connect the proposed arrangement to the installed condition, agreed checks and documented handover. Charger commissioning is explicitly scoped and charged.
